Author’s Journey To The Mysterious Island of Publication

I’m a writer. That means that I am trying to find my way to the mysterious island of publication.

This island is believed in by few, but there is a map. Not everyone can read the map and make it to the mysterious island of publication because it is complicated.

Not everything is as it seems. First, you learn one thing and then you unlearn it.

Next, you spend lots of money to learn the right thing. Lots and lots of money.

Then you realize you need to write, write, write. Thousands of words will be written by you before you even acquire an agent.

Agent you say? Yes, agent. That person who is amazing and has the map key to success.

But, before you get an agent, you will edit, edit, edit. As if thick skin is admirable, we crave it to overcome the blues. And when we can’t develop thick skin quickly enough, we try to grow it with chocolate.

Once you have edited, grown thicker skin, entered contests, then you begin your quest for an agent. Then it is query, query, query.

If you manage to gain an agent’s representation, you have just landed a valuable ally.

But the step of waiting is relived over, and over, and over…

Then there are publishers…

The journey to the mysterious island of publication is full of unexpected pitfalls, breath-taking landscape, and never-ending adventure.

Only a small percentage of the journeyers arrive at their destination. Such a small percentage that many believe it is next to impossible to get there.

Still, a writer fights to believe even when others think they are crazy. We shrug our shoulders and say, “Well, of course I’m crazy. I’ve been hearing voices in my head for years. You’re kinda slow to catch on.”

What crazy part of the journey are you in right now?

I am just beginning my journey and love it! It reminds me of the Robert Frost poem “And miles to go before I sleep” except “And miles of words before I sleep” 🙂
